Papers, 1724-1761.

This collection of Joseph Hull papers includes a journal kept by him on a journey from Rhode Island to New York in September and October of 1724. It also includes the account book kept by him as Collector of Customs from 1733 to 1761. The journal includes daily entries describing Hull's journey to New York which was undertaken in order to deliver a horse to Peter Solgard (?), captain of the ship Greyhound. Hull kept accounts of expenses incurred in caring for the horse, mentions towns passed through, fellow travellers, lodgings en route and in New York, and people he dined with. He also includes a memorandum on a voyage on the Greyhound made by Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740), Governor of Virginia, and mentions other matters such as visiting a Jewish synagogue and holding a meeting of Friends. The customs accounts include frequent, though not daily, entries noting individuals whose goods passed through customs, fees for foreign and coasting vessels, office rent and board signed by Elizabeth Shackmaple Allen (1714-1783), vessels and goods from plantations in America not under the King's dominion, and duties imposed by the Act for the Trade of the British Sugar Colonies. Also included is a memo concerning the transportation of naval stores. Entries are signed by Hull and by John Shackmaple Jr. ( -1743) in Hull's absence.
